Cannabis is now Schedule III

In December 2025, cannabis was officially reclassified from Schedule I to Schedule III. This changes everything about how you access cannabis for your health.

Your body has an entire system designed to interact with cannabinoids. Understanding your endocannabinoid tone helps guide the right treatment.

Pharmaceutical Alternatives

Many patients are exploring cannabis as an alternative to opioids, benzodiazepines, and sleep medications. Holistic practitioners guide safe transitions.

What cannabis medicine may help with

Research is accelerating now that cannabis is Schedule III. Here are some of the conditions where clinical evidence shows the most promise.

Chronic Pain

The most common reason patients seek cannabis. Cannabinoids interact with pain receptors throughout the body, offering relief for neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia, and arthritis.

Chemotherapy Support

Cannabis has been used for decades to manage chemo side effects. Nausea, appetite loss, and pain. Now it can be properly prescribed alongside cancer treatment.

Sleep Disorders

Insomnia, sleep apnea, disrupted cycles. Specific cannabinoid profiles (CBN, THC microdosing) show promising results for deep, restorative sleep.

Anxiety & PTSD

CBD and balanced THC:CBD ratios are being studied for generalized anxiety, social anxiety, and PTSD. Veterans are among the fastest-growing patient groups.

Epilepsy & Seizures

FDA-approved CBD medication already exists for severe epilepsy. Rescheduling expands access to a wider range of cannabinoid treatments for seizure disorders.

Autoimmune & Inflammation

Crohn's, MS, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis. Cannabis interacts with the immune system in ways that may help regulate overactive inflammatory responses.

Frequently asked questions

Can cannabis actually be prescribed now?

Not yet. While cannabis was reclassified from Schedule I to Schedule III in December 2025, the full prescription framework is still being developed. Right now, doctors in medical marijuana states can issue recommendations (not prescriptions) that allow patients to access cannabis through state programs. The transition to a true prescription model is expected to roll out as the final rules are implemented through November 2026. That's exactly what Secret Nature Rx is preparing for.

What is Secret Nature Rx?

Secret Nature Rx is a new venture from the team behind Secret Nature, the premium cannabis brand trusted by hundreds of thousands of customers since 2018. While Secret Nature has built its reputation on quality hemp products, Secret Nature Rx is focused on something entirely different: preparing for the new era of prescribed cannabis medicine. The exact model will take shape as the regulatory framework develops. Join the waitlist to stay informed and be first in line.

What's the difference between a recommendation and a prescription?

Today, doctors issue cannabis "recommendations," which are essentially a physician's statement that cannabis may benefit your condition. This allows you to obtain a state medical marijuana card. A true prescription is a formal medical order specifying a medication, dosage, and instructions, filled at a pharmacy like any other medicine. Schedule III classification is what makes real prescriptions possible for cannabis, but the infrastructure is still being built out.

Will I be able to get cannabis through telemedicine?

That's the expectation. Other Schedule III substances like ketamine and testosterone are already prescribed via telemedicine, and cannabis is expected to follow the same model once the prescription framework is in place. Many states already allow telehealth consultations for cannabis recommendations today.

What conditions might qualify for cannabis medicine?

Currently, qualifying conditions for medical cannabis recommendations vary by state but commonly include chronic pain, PTSD, anxiety, epilepsy, cancer and chemotherapy side effects, multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease, and insomnia. As cannabis research accelerates under Schedule III, the evidence base will grow and more conditions may be added.

Can holistic or naturopathic doctors recommend cannabis?

In many states, yes. Naturopathic doctors, integrative medicine physicians, and other holistic practitioners can currently provide cannabis recommendations where state law allows. Once the prescription framework is finalized, practitioners with appropriate DEA registration will be able to write formal cannabis prescriptions.

Will insurance ever cover cannabis?

Possibly, but not yet. Schedule III classification opens the door for insurance coverage discussions that were impossible under Schedule I. Some states may develop coverage frameworks, and FDA-approved cannabis formulations could eventually qualify. For now, cannabis remains an out-of-pocket expense for patients.

Is cannabis safe to use with other medications?

Cannabis can interact with certain medications, particularly blood thinners, sedatives, and some antidepressants. This is one of the key reasons why working with a knowledgeable healthcare provider matters. Never start cannabis without discussing it with your doctor first.
