Can You Fail a Drug Test Due to CBD Hemp Flower?
CBD flower contains small amounts of THC, so it’s certainly possible to fail a drug test after smoking hemp buds. It’s far less likely to fail a drug test from hemp than it is from weed, but the possibility still exists. Learn why you might fail a drug test after smoking hemp flower, and find out what you can do to prevent it if desired.
Can I fail a drug test from CBD bud?
Yes, however unlikely, it is technically possible to fail a drug test after smoking CBD flower. According to the 2018 Farm Bill, CBD flower must contain less than 0.3% delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) on a dry weight basis, but that still might be enough to trigger a positive result for THC under certain circumstances.
Think about it this way. If CBD buds you’re smoking contain 15% CBD and 0.3% THC, that means you’re ingesting around 3mg of THC for every 150mg of CBD you smoke.
Considering that the average Secret Nature CBD pre-roll contains around 100mg CBD, it would be relatively easy to ingest dozens of milligrams of THC per week as a regular hemp smoker without ever once feeling the slightest bit high. After time, those dozens of milligrams could accumulate enough to make it seem like you’ve been using THC on a drug test.
How long does hemp flower stay in your urine?
The compounds in cannabis flower can remain in your urine for up to 30 days. Detoxing can help to a degree, but expect cannabinoids to remain detectable in urine drug tests for at least a week.
Once you’ve smoked enough hemp to accumulate measurable amounts of THC in your system, it will take a little while for this cannabinoid to work its way out. When you only ingest a tiny amount, THC can leave your system in as little as three days. When you ingest the amounts of THC urine drug tests can detect, though, considerably longer excretion times are to be expected.
Does CBD hemp flower show in a drug test?
Drug tests typically don’t test for CBD. Major testing companies like LabCorp do offer CBD tests, but they aren’t in wide circulation. So no, “CBD hemp flower” is not one of the substances technicians check for when they examine the chemical contents of your urine.
The trace amounts of THC present in CBD hemp flower might, however, show up in a drug test if you’re a heavy hemp smoker. Casual or light CBD smokers have little to nothing to fear, but it’s easier to accumulate detectable levels of THC in your urine than you might think.
Will CBD flower show on a probation drug test?
Most counties don’t care whether their probationers use CBD or not. They do, however, generally mind if you use THC while you’re on probation, and drug tests might not be able to tell the difference.
If you use a considerable amount of CBD flower that contains up to 0.3% THC, it’s certainly possible to fail a court-mandated drug test. Consider moderating or even entirely eliminating your CBD flower usage if you have a probation drug test within the next 30 days.
Can you smoke CBD buds on probation?
It is not recommended to smoke CBD flower while you are on probation. While 0.3% THC might not seem like much, it adds up if you smoke hemp flower habitually, and your PO won’t care very much whether that THC came from weed or hemp.
Then again, enjoying a CBD joint once or twice a month is unlikely to deposit enough THC in your system to show up in a drug test.
Is it OK to smoke CBD while on probation?
That’s a question for your probation officer. Depending on your county or state, there might not be any issue with you smoking CBD-rich hemp while on probation. Cannabis use of any kind is generally only problematic in states where THC remains illegal.
If you’re in an area where cannabis is still considered a drug, just make sure the court is cool with any false positives for THC that might appear in your urinalysis results. Spoiler alert: they’re probably not.
Does CBD flower show up in a 10-panel drug screen?
A 10-panel drug test is a standard type of drug urinalysis that tests for 10 of the most common illicit substances. The substances a 10-panel drug tests detects are:
- Amphetamines
- THC & synthetic cannabinoids
- Cocaine
- Opioids
- Barbituates
- Benzodiazepines
- PCP
- Quaaludes
- Methadone
- Propoxyphene
As you can see, “CBD flower” is nowhere on the list. THC, though, is included in a 10-panel drug screen, and smoking CBD flower can cause a false positive for THC.
I smoked CBD and failed a drug test. What happened?
You’re not alone. It’s relatively common to fail a drug test for THC after smoking CBD flower since hemp buds can contain up to 0.3% THC. Depending on the circumstances, this might be a situation you can explain away. Otherwise, take your failed drug test as a reminder to do plenty of research about a substance before using it.
