The man and the strain
Jack Herer (1939 to 2010) was a former Goldwater Republican turned cannabis activist whose 1985 book The Emperor Wears No Clothes laid out the case that hemp had been suppressed for industrial and political reasons. The book sold hundreds of thousands of copies and became the movement's textbook. Sensi Seeds in Amsterdam named their new sativa hybrid after him in the mid-1990s, and the strain went on to win multiple Cannabis Cups and, unusually, to be distributed through Dutch pharmacies as a recognized cultivar.
The name did the strain no harm, but it earned its reputation on the plant's merits: a Haze high with the structure and finish time of an indica, which was rare in the 1990s. That combination is why it is still bred, sold and searched for today.
Jack Herer genetics and lineage
Sensi Seeds has never published the exact recipe, but the accepted lineage is Haze crossed with a hybrid of Northern Lights #5 and Shiva Skunk. Haze brings the soaring, cerebral sativa high and the terpinolene aroma; Northern Lights #5 shortens the flowering time and adds resin and calm; Shiva Skunk adds vigor and yield.
Because it is a multi-parent hybrid, Jack Herer throws several phenotypes. Growers describe four main ones: three that lean sativa, with the classic tall structure and clear high, and one that leans indica, with denser buds and a heavier feel. Jack Herer is the strain people reach for when they want to feel sharper rather than higher. The onset is smooth, a lift in mood and attention within a few minutes, then a long plateau where ideas come easily and conversation flows. It is famously functional: many people use it for work that needs focus, for creative sessions and for social daytime plans.
It is not a heavy strain, but it is not weak either. At higher doses the Haze side shows up as a faster, more cerebral buzz that some people find a bit much. Dry mouth is common; couch-lock is not. Effects generally run two to three hours with a gentle taper and no crash.

The nose is pine forest first, then a peppery spice, then citrus peel and a sweet, earthy base. On the palate it is clean and slightly herbal, with the pine carrying through to the exhale. It is a subtler aroma than a Diesel or a Cookies strain, and one that many people describe as the smell of classic Dutch coffee-shop weed.
The profile is usually led by terpinolene, the fresh, piney, slightly floral terpene shared with Durban Poison and Super Lemon Haze, supported by caryophyllene (spice) and pinene (pine). Terpinolene-dominant strains are relatively uncommon and tend to share Jack's uplifting, clear character.

Growing Jack Herer
Jack Herer is a moderate grow: forgiving of small mistakes, but it wants attention to phenotype and to height. Sativa-leaning plants stretch and want 9 to 10 weeks of flowering; the indica-leaning phenotype finishes closer to 8. It prefers a warm, Mediterranean-style climate outdoors and does well under lights with early topping and some training.
Yields are solid rather than huge, and the buds are lighter and more elongated than a modern indica's, with plenty of resin. If you are growing from seed, pop several and keep the plant whose smell and structure you like; the phenotype variation is the strain's main quirk.
