How to choose a THC drink
What a THC drink is
A THC drink is a beverage infused with delta-9 THC, the compound in cannabis that produces a high, in a measured dose printed on the can. The ones sold online, including Cali Sun, use THC extracted from hemp rather than marijuana, which is what makes them legal to ship. Most are sparkling: seltzers, sodas and mocktails. The THC is usually turned into a water-soluble emulsion so it mixes into the liquid and absorbs faster than an oil-based edible.
Picking a dose: 2.5, 5, 10 mg and up
The number on the can is everything. 2.5 mg is a microdose that many people barely notice. 5 mg is the standard single serving and the right starting point: a clear, social lift that most people compare to one drink. 10 mg is a full edible dose and noticeably stronger. 25 mg and above is for experienced users only. If you are unsure, buy 5 mg cans. You can always have two; you cannot un-drink a 25.
Onset and how long it lasts
Nano-emulsified drinks like Cali Sun typically come on in 15 to 30 minutes. Older oil-based drinks and gummies take 45 to 90 minutes. Either way the effect peaks around the one-hour mark and fades over two to three hours, longer at higher doses. The most common mistake is opening a second can at twenty minutes because the first has not landed yet. Wait the full hour.
How THC drinks are legal
The 2018 Farm Bill made hemp federally legal and defined it as cannabis with no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC by dry weight. That limit is a concentration, not a total, so a 355 ml can with 5 mg of THC is about 0.0015% by weight and qualifies as a hemp product even though the dose is enough to feel. Some states have since restricted or banned intoxicating hemp drinks, and the rules change several times a year. Check your state before you order, and buy from a seller that publishes its lab results.
Reading the lab report
A legitimate THC drink comes with a certificate of analysis from an accredited third-party lab. Look for four things: the total THC per can in milligrams, the delta-9 concentration by weight, the lab's ISO 17025 accreditation, and a test date within the last year. Cali Sun's July 2026 reports from Trichome Analytical show 5.25 to 5.72 mg of THC per can depending on flavor, at 0.0015 to 0.0016% by weight. Every flavor's certificate is public.
Sugar, calories and everything else in the can
THC seltzers usually run 0 to 10 calories; THC sodas run 25 to 100 depending on the sweetener. Cali Sun is a soda at 25 to 30 calories and 5 to 6 g of sugar, sweetened with cane sugar and monk fruit, with holy basil, rhodiola, lion's mane and cordyceps, plus magnesium, potassium and vitamins B6 and B12. Read the ingredient list the way you would for any drink. The THC is one line of it.
THC drinks compared with alcohol
The obvious differences: no ethanol, no calories from alcohol, no alcohol hangover. The less obvious one is that THC does not feel like alcohol. It is more of a lift and a soften than a loosening, and it does not build the way a third or fourth drink does. It is still intoxicating. Do not drive, and pace cans the way you would pace drinks.
Drug tests
THC drinks will show up on a drug test. Hemp-derived THC is chemically identical to any other THC, and standard tests screen for THC metabolites. If you are tested for work or sport, THC drinks are not for you.
Serving and storage
Serve cold. Store cans out of direct sunlight and heat, which degrade both flavor and cannabinoids. Once open, finish it that day. Keep all THC drinks where children cannot reach them; the cans look like any other soda.
