THC Drinks, Explained: How They Work, How They Are Legal and How to Dose

What a THC drink is, why 5 mg is the right first dose, when it kicks in, how hemp-derived THC is legal, what a drug test sees, and how to read the lab report.

THC drinks have gone from novelty to the fastest-growing corner of the hemp market in about three years, and the questions people ask about them have barely changed: do they work, how long until they kick in, how can this possibly be legal, and what does a drug test see. This is the plain answer to each, written by people who make one.

What a THC drink is

A THC drink is a beverage, usually sparkling, with a measured dose of delta-9 THC in it. The number on the can is the whole story: 2.5 mg is a microdose, 5 mg is a single serving, 10 mg is a full edible dose, and 25 mg and up is for experienced users. The THC in drinks sold online comes from hemp rather than marijuana, which is what makes them legal to ship, and it is usually turned into a water-soluble emulsion so it mixes into the liquid and absorbs faster than an oil-based gummy.

Cali Sun, our own, is a 5 mg hemp-derived THC soda with real fruit flavor, zero alcohol and 25 to 30 calories a can.

Do THC drinks get you high?

Yes, in proportion to the dose. A 5 mg can produces a light, clear lift that most people compare to a single drink: sociable, noticeable, and gone in a few hours. A 10 mg can feels like a proper edible. It is a different feeling from alcohol. THC lifts and softens rather than loosens, and it does not build the way a third or fourth drink does, but it is intoxicating and you should not drive on it.

How long a THC drink takes to kick in, and how long it lasts

Nano-emulsified drinks come on in 15 to 30 minutes. Oil-based drinks and gummies take 45 to 90 minutes. In both cases the peak lands around the one-hour mark and the effect tapers over two to three hours, longer at higher doses. Food in your stomach slows the onset slightly. The most common mistake with THC drinks is opening a second can at twenty minutes because the first one "isn't working." Wait the hour.

5 mg, 10 mg, 25 mg: what the number means

2.5 mg is a microdose. Many people notice nothing, some feel a slight ease. 5 mg is the standard serving and the right first dose: clear, social, comparable to one drink. 10 mg is a full edible dose, noticeably stronger, better as a second can an hour after the first than as a starting point. 25 mg and up is heavy, and in a drink it arrives fast. If you are not sure, buy 5 mg cans. You can always have two.

How THC drinks are legal

The 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp from the Controlled Substances Act and defined it as cannabis with no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC by dry weight. That is a concentration limit, not a total. A 355 ml can of soda weighs about 355 g; 5 mg of THC in it is roughly 0.0015% by weight, two hundred times under the line. So a can with enough THC to feel is, chemically and legally, a hemp product at the federal level.

States are another matter. Several have restricted or banned intoxicating hemp beverages, some cap the dose per container, and the rules change several times a year. Check your state before ordering, and buy from a seller that will not ship where it is prohibited.

Are THC drinks bad for you?

The honest answer is that they are not health products and we do not sell them as one. What is true is that a THC drink has no ethanol, so none of alcohol's calories or hangover, and a can like Cali Sun is 25 to 30 calories with 5 to 6 g of sugar. THC itself affects people differently. Common side effects at higher doses are dry mouth, drowsiness, red eyes and, for some people, anxiety. Nobody under 21 should drink them, nor anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, and if you take medication, ask your doctor. Start with one can.

Will a THC drink show up on a drug test?

Yes. Hemp-derived THC is the same molecule as any other THC, and standard tests screen for its metabolites, which can be detected for days after a single dose and for weeks with regular use. If you are tested for work or sport, THC drinks are not for you.

THC drinks and alcohol

Do not mix them until you know how THC feels on its own. The two amplify each other, and mixing is the most common way people overdo a low-dose drink. Once you know your response, treat cans the way you treat drinks: pace them, eat something, and never drive.

How to read the lab report

Every legitimate THC drink comes with a certificate of analysis from an accredited third-party lab. Four things to look for: total THC per can in milligrams (it should match the label), the delta-9 concentration by weight (it should be under 0.3%), the lab's ISO 17025 accreditation, and a test date inside the last twelve months. Cali Sun's July 2026 reports from Trichome Analytical show 5.25 to 5.72 mg of THC per can depending on flavor, at 0.0015 to 0.0016% by weight. If a seller cannot show you a report like that, do not buy the drink.

Where to buy THC drinks

Grocery stores mostly do not carry them yet; liquor stores in some states do. Online is the widest selection and the only way to compare lab reports before you buy. Cali Sun ships direct from Secret Nature in 6, 12, 18 and 24 packs, free shipping over $99, 21 and over only.

Quick answers

Is 10 mg a lot? For a first time, yes. Start at 5.

How many THC drinks can I have in a day? One or two at 5 mg is plenty for most people. Effects stack.

Does THC soda work if I sip it slowly? Yes. It absorbs through digestion, so slow sipping spreads the onset out rather than cancelling it.

Do THC drinks expire? Check the date on the can. Cannabinoids degrade with heat and light, so an old can is weaker, not dangerous.

How should I store them? Cold, out of sunlight, and away from children. The cans look like any other soda.
